Concord Origin Story: Doug Winzell
By Kate Huber

In the world of comic books, origin stories inform the reader of the identity and motivations of heroes and villains (thankfully, we only have the former here). Like Spider-Man or Captain America, your origin story is important as it defines who you are today. Learn about the experiences, people, and influences that shaped Concord's Doug Winzell by reading below!

Doug Winzell, Cybersecurity Consultant
Where did you grow up?

Western Kentucky and Manchester, Connecticut. I left after high school to join the United States Marine Corps.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Camping and overland exploring.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life?

Kevin Mitnick. Without his early exploits and communication, we would not have the cybersecurity industry we have today.

What is your favorite travel destination?

The Pacific Northwest. I love the mountains, forest, and shore.

What’s an experience that shaped who you are today?

Multiple combat deployments as a Marine and later working in intelligence as a contractor remind me daily not to sweat the small stuff.

What is your favorite food?

I love good tacos. Being so close to the Mexico border in Las Vegas, this is not an issue for me.

How did you end up in your current career?

I've been interested in hacking and computers for a long time. After working in systems engineering, business intelligence, and software engineering, I decided that cybersecurity was my main area of interest in IT.

What is your favorite hobby?

I returned to school later in my career to study geospatial information systems and learn about mapmaking and remote sensing of the Earth. Although I decided not to pursue it professionally, I am a satellite enthusiast and love making my own maps from Landsat and Sentinel-2 Earth observation platforms.

When was a moment where you felt most accomplished?

After three years of touring the western U.S. in an RV with my wife, we didn't get divorced.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Don’t worry too much about others’ opinions. Pursue your interests and passions, and focus on the impact you can make with your unique gifts.
